Latest Developments in Our Barndominium Apartment Journey - Discover the latest developments in our Barndominium Apartment Journey

I'm thrilled to share some incredible progress on our barndominium project! Despite a hectic few months, which included family trips and winter chaos, we've achieved significant milestones that I can't wait to tell you about. Latest Developments in Our Barndominium Apartment Journey

Throughout the process, our contractor and team have been instrumental in ensuring everything is done right. Here are a few photo highlights:

Construction scene with unfinished drywall and a ladder in a room. A person stands in a doorway, sunlight outside. Tools and boxes lie around.
Living/Sleeping/Kitchen Space, looking toward front door and bathroom on right. The best, most accommodating contractor ever, Ben Horsch, walking through the door!!

WE'VE COMPLETED THE DRYWALL INSTALLATION, MUD, TAPE, AND SHOWER INSTALL!  Latest Developments on Our Barndominium Apartment The transformation of our space is truly remarkable, turning what was just a frame into an actual, LIVEABLE HOME. Seeing the drywall up has given me a glimpse of the light at the end of this tunnel. The 32"x48"shower installation in the corner is a big step toward creating a functional living space. It's a really good size bathroom, 7'x11', for such a compact living arrangement.

Bathroom under construction with exposed pipes, unfinished drywall, and a shower stall. Tools and debris scattered on bare floor.
Shower closeup during install. Tom said many potty words while framing this space. I’m sure Ben said a few while setting it, as well!

Room under renovation with unfinished drywall. A green ladder, fan, and boxes are scattered on the floor. Bright lighting from above.
Another view of the living space. You can see the closet on the left of the hallway. There is a second closet behind the front door. It will house the water softener and act as a broom closet. The left of the photo shows the rough opening for the door to the barn, which is our third point of egress. It’s not required, but if I ever have to stay out there and feed animals I’d prefer to get into the barn without walking outside.

Next Steps: Painting, Flooring, and Cabinets

Now that the walls are complete, we're shifting gears to focus on the next exciting phases:

1. Painting: We’re in the planning stages for selecting paint colors that will bring warmth and personality to the space. I can already envision a calming palette that will complement the rustic features of the barndominium.

2. Flooring: Once the walls are painted, flooring installation will be next on the agenda. We're leaning towards something durable yet stylish that fits our aesthetic.

3. Cabinets and Fixtures: With the shower done, it’s time to think about cabinetry for the kitchen and bathroom, as well as fixtures that will complete the look. Those choices are what truly make a house feel like home, and I’m excited to begin this process.

...and a few photos from around the farm:

A brown horse with a bridle stands at the open door of a trailer. Sunlight casts shadows on the ground, with trees visible in the background.
Gogo still won’t load into my trailer! 😕 🙁 😒 🐎
Eggs inside an incubator with white and brown shells visible. Text "IMPORTANT NOTES" is on the device. Indoor setting.
I’ve started two dozen eggs in the incubator. My nephew has moved to Wichita, and my son will be moving back from college. I have to keep this family fed! 🐣
Two sheep, one white and one black, stand among bare trees on dry, brown earth. Shadows stretch across the ground in the afternoon sun.
I’m also on the hunt for a ram to breed to my ewes. Let me know if you hear of one close to Wichita! Would like to have early spring babies in 2027! 🐑 🐏 🐑

This journey is about more than just building and growing livestock for food—it’s about crafting a space filled with hope. Thank you all for your support and encouragement so far. I can’t wait to share more updates as we continue to bring our barndominium studio, chicks, and lambs to life! Have any of you experienced a similar renovation journey?
